Thousands of gallons of water are wasted by older toilets. Older toilets use 3.5, 5, or 7 gallons of water per flush (GPF). Federal plumbing standards require new toilets use no more than 1.6 GPF. If an older toilet needs repairs, sometimes it’s best to replace it with a 1.6 GPF toilet. The new toilet can pay for itself in water-usage savings PLUS eliminate the charges for repairing the old toilet.
The City of Plano charges $.60 (60 cents) per 1000 gallons– for up to 5,000 gallons in one month. The cost increases to $3.10 per 1,000 gallons — for 5,001+ gallons used in one month. If you water your lawn, you are paying the higher rate during summer, if not all year long. Assuming 25 flushes per day, a new 1.6 GPF toilet could save a family of four up to 50,000 gallons of water, or $150.00 per toilet, per year!
